Project evaluation

With in the first stages of this project I was looking primarily at politics , Middle Eastern history and culture ,linking this to diaspora and the exploitation of Arabic culture , I initiated this through gathering research and looking at articles .however as I started moving in to the second and third weeks of this project I felt limited with many ideas and founding it difficult to develop my work showing clear links between what I was creating , therefore I decided to slightly change the theme of my project and instead looked at the power of Palestinian woman with in the house and their environment . Although I had changed the route of my project I still used the same research research from the beginning of the project to support my work . I responded to research through methods such as draping and collage making as well as using the heat press this project in multiple ways this term in order to develop and respond to research . Through my use of different methods of experimentation this made me realise that I was limiting my self with the initial ideas of my project.

With the time I had dedicated to workflow where I focused on Reseach I realised that I should not be focusing on mainly fashion to inspire my work , therefore I started looking at Middle Eastern architecture to connect to my research to my sketchbook work as well as exhibitions such as the Palesitne exhebition at the P21 gallery which presented a wide range of Palestinian art ranging from paintings to objects and instillations . Through my wide wide range of research this allowed me to be able to use a wider range of experimentation in response to this research . I found that focusing on small Middle Eastern designers such as ‘Nazzal studio’ a Palestinian brand which creates clothes inspired by traditional Palestinian clothing but changes them to fit in with society today , I find their work to be more personal and meaningful in regards to my theme . I found that looking at photographers that focused on telling the story of females through their work such as Rania Mattar gave me insight in to what to focus on with in this project . For example , Rania’s focus on Middle Eastern woman with in her photography gave me the idea to focus on Palestinian woman in their environment , and finding research in response to this in the library lead me to using things such as traditional clothes and foods associated with Palestine such as oranges as metaphors with deeper meanings with in my work .

Most of the experimentation used with in my work in this project was adapted based on traditional Palestinian techniques traditionally done by woman such as hand embroidery and weaving which was a main aspect with in my final outcome . My embroidery included using orange wool in order to create a pattern based on the oranges I carved at the beginning of the project . I feel as if through out this project I explored the use of different surfaces and materials through things such as textile samples more than in any other project I had done .using a range of samples and methods to express my work such as illustration , collage and drape in order to send the message I am aiming to convey through my work . After exploring with different techniques I found my weaving different shades of orange straw , wool and raffia tape was what worked best with in my project and the silhouette I was exploring based on Palestinian woman collecting Jaffa oranges in baskets and traditional Palestinian headwear .throughout this project I learnt new skills to help me complete work more effectively and more efficiently such as employing the use of action plans more often in order to plan out my day and what needs to be done as well as making comments on peoples work during walk around and adding them to padlet and workflow , using other peoples work as inspiration on how I can improve my own work .

I had to make changes with what I was creating in regards to my final outcome due to time management and the time taken to create the textiles for my outcome .In addition to this restarting my project in the beginning weeks of part 3 meant that I was behind at the start of the project . In order to catch up with my work I I started allocating different times of the day for different activities such as research and sketchbook . During the spring break I set goals to complete in the first and second week , while exploring ways to completed my outcome I found that through experimenting with different textile samples weaving was the most effective way to complete my outcome in the most effective way . However I had to change the way that my outcome looked as I I found that although doing the weaves as quicker than doing crochet out of straw , it still took a lot of time and so instead of fully weaving the head part of my outcome I only did a weave on the front part . I had problems with making sure that my outcome sat properly on the body , therefore I spent the last two nights before handing in my final outcome adding extra pieces of fabric on the inside of the headpiece to make sure there is extra room and the head part can stand up by its self .

Over the course of this project I aimed to complete a sufficient amount of work every week by creating a weekly as well as a daily action plan stating what needed to be done and how I will do it . However due to being a person that works slowly and other factors in my life I did not always meet these deadlines . I would have liked to have done my own personal photoshoot other than my lookbook shoot however I did not have the time to do this as I had to focus on completing my sketchbook work and adding to my workflow . By the half way point of the project I feel as If I started to manage my time more effectively and was completing more work both In and out of my sketchbook , as in the beginning of the project , although I was planning out my time I still felt limited with the amount of work I was managing to do . Therefore , in conclusion to this I think that although my planning was not great initially , I managed to use resources such as workflow and padlet by the end of the project to help me make sure I had completed and caught up with all my work successfully but I still could have planned out my time better in regards to creating my final outcome in order for it to be more refined .

Throughout this project I used the reflection section part on workflow as the main way of expressing how I feel in this project , focusing on what I had done throughout the day and what needs to be done in order to improve my work .During crits and walk around’s where I would look at the work others had completed I would upload their work to workflow , doing this allowed me to focus on what I find successful in the work of others and how I can use these things in my own work . This type of reflecting helped me a lot as it made sure I explored different methods and techniques in a wide variety of ways when completing work. At the beginning of my project while reflecting I noticed that I may have been struggling to complete work as my work didn’t really have a deeper menacing behind this , my collages and research were very surface level . Reflecting made me realise that I needed to change the route of my project . I feel as if the most successful aspect of my work with in this project is my reflection and research as I always managed to stay on top of this and wrote in detail , however my sketchbook look work was not strong enough and could have been improved by doing more things such as drapes .

With in this project I used multiple ways of communication and presentation in order to show my work such as creating textile samples , illustrations and drape in order to communicate my ideas , with in this project I experimented with prints based on research images , which I had not done in projects before . I initially started this project with a project proposal that does not completely line up with the journey of steps I ended up taking to reach my final outcome due to the change in my project , however I did stay consistent with my workflow as I stated I would in my project proposal as a way of commenting on my development throughout the project .However , with in my project proposal I stated that I would do more 3D work , although I did do a couple drapes with in this project I feel as if I could have done more .I think that my strengths include staying consistent when documenting my progress on workflow and reflecting on what I have done as well as the research aspect of my work , however I find that I struggle to develop sketchbook work and often find that I am limiting my self .

Looking back at what I have achieved with in this project I would like do move my work further in the extra time that I now have by doing my own personal shoot with communication elements which I did not manage to do during my time on part 3 of the course .I also think that creating large textile samples would be a good addition to my outcomes next to my headpiece as it shows moving forwards with my thinking . Looking back at my project I think that I could of strengthened by submission through the use o9f more 3D experimentation using a wider range of materials , both of my drapes were created out of paper in order to focus on silhouette , however I think I needed to focus on colour and texture more with in my drapes and 3D work . If I were given more time with in this project I would have created a more refined final outcome , I feel as if I rushed with the final stages of creating my work and more detail could have been added to them if I had more time .
